Jessica Marfeo is 19 years old. She will represent her state Rhode Island at Miss America 2014 pageant, which will be held at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey for the first time since 2005 on September 15, 2013.

Marfeo’s local title was Miss University of Rhode Island, and she beat a field of nine contestants, including others that were rumored to be favorites in the competition. It became clear that Marfeo caught the judges’ eye after she nearly swept the preliminary awards, including the talent award, for her crowd-rousing rendition of “Orange Colored Sky” by Milton Delugg and Willie Stein.

Marfeo is a junior at the University of Rhode Island, studying biology, elementary education and pre-med. Her goal is to earn a Master’s degree in physician assistant studies, specializing in OB-GYN and earning a second Master’s in public health.
